The plain version
What a four hands massage actually is — and what it is not
A four hands massage is 1 client on 1 table with 2 therapists working at the same time. Most of the session is mirrored: the same stroke, at the same pressure and the same speed, running down both sides of the body at once. Some of it is split, one therapist at the shoulders while the other works the legs. Either way it is one massage delivered by two people, so the coverage doubles rather than the hour.
The techniques are not exotic. Everything the pair do comes from the modalities used in an ordinary session here — Swedish strokes, acupressure, the firmer work most people call deep tissue, the same oil, the same room. What changes is the choreography. Two therapists have to move as one, which takes practice together and a plan agreed before the session starts.
It is uncommon because of arithmetic, not difficulty: it costs a studio 2 therapists for 1 client, so it only exists where the schedule can absorb that. Ours can, some of the time. That is why the answer to "can I book four hands" is always a phone call rather than a form, and why every figure on our published price list is a single-therapist rate.
| Booking | On the table | Therapists | Usual length | How it is booked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Four hands massage | 1 client | 2, at once | 60 or 90 min | Phone, 2–7 days ahead |
| Couples massage | 2 clients, 2 tables | 2, one each | 60 or 90 min | Phone or online |
| Body Massage | 1 client | 1 | 45–120 min | Phone, online, or walk in |
The actual appeal
Why the mind gives up
With 1 therapist you track them, whether or not you mean to. A hand lifts off your shoulder and some part of your attention follows it, waiting to learn where it lands next. That tracking is quiet and automatic, and most people never notice it until the day it stops. It is the reason a massage can be deeply relaxing and still leave the mind half-awake.
With 4 hands there is nothing to track. Two things happen at once in two places, then in two different places, then three, and the part of you that predicts the next stroke finds no pattern. It gives up, usually inside the first 5 or 10 minutes. That is what people describe: not more pressure, not more coverage, but the relief of a mind that has stopped running ahead of the hour.
We will not dress that up as science. NCCIH's summary of massage therapy is the plain version — reasonable support for short-term relief of muscle tension, stress and some kinds of pain, thinner support for much else — and its review of what the science says sets out where each line sits. Cleveland Clinic covers the same ground. None mentions 2 therapists, because no research on four hands exists. What we have described is what guests report, and it is worth exactly that much.
Logistics
What actually happens in the room
Practically, the session runs like any other. You undress to whatever level you are comfortable with, you stay draped the whole time, and only the area being worked is uncovered — the rule is identical with 2 therapists and with 1. You lie face down to start and turn over once, roughly halfway. The room is the same private treatment room used for every other booking.
The pair barely speak. Once the plan is agreed, they synchronize by watching rather than talking, and long stretches pass with no conversation at all. If something needs changing — pressure that has gone past useful, a spot that is sore rather than tight — say it once, out loud, and both will adjust. You never have to brief them separately, or keep track of which hand belongs to whom.
Techniques layer in the same way they would with a single therapist. Heated stones to warm an area before the hands-on work is the most common request, and pressure is set by you at the start. What works badly is minute-by-minute negotiation: the effect depends on not having to think, so the more that is settled beforehand, the better the hour goes.
The honest limit
This is the one service you cannot walk in for
We take walk-ins every day between 9 AM and 8 PM, and for almost everything on the menu that works out. This is the exception: it needs 2 therapists free at the same moment, on a day when the rest of the schedule allows both to be released. Arriving hopeful is the one approach that reliably does not work, and we would rather you read that here than hear it at the desk.
So it is arranged on the phone. Call (503) 381-5657, say "four hands", and you will have an honest answer about the window you want in about a minute. Online booking is open 24 hours for everything else, but the scheduler cannot see whether 2 therapists can be freed at once, so a request made through it becomes a phone call anyway.
On price: this is 2 therapists' time, quoted on that call rather than printed on the menu. Every figure on our service list is a single-therapist rate, and posting a number that turned out not to apply would be worse than posting none. Everything else works as it does for any other booking — 1 price agreed up front, the same by card or cash, no membership, no therapist tier, gratuity never expected.
- It cannot be booked online. The scheduler has no way to hold 2 therapists for 1 client.
- It cannot be a walk-in. This is the only service on our menu where that is true.
- The price is quoted on the phone, because it is 2 therapists' time rather than a menu line.
- Everything else is ordinary: draped throughout, pressure set by you, 1 price agreed up front.

What to say when you call
Three pieces of information get an accurate answer fast: the length you want, the day and rough time, and whether 4 hands is a firm requirement or something you would like if it is possible. That last one matters more than people expect — if it is a preference, we can hold the slot with 1 therapist instead of losing the appointment.
Mention any area you want concentrated on, and any pressure preference, in the same call. Two therapists cannot each check in with you separately mid-session without breaking the effect, so more of the plan is set in advance than it would be with 1 therapist. A minute on the phone buys a noticeably better hour.
How far ahead to call
2 or 3 days is comfortable. 7 days is better if the evening is fixed — an anniversary, a birthday, someone flying in. Same-day is occasionally possible and never something to count on. Late slots and weekends are hardest, because those are the hours when the book is fullest and neither therapist is easy to release.
If it cannot happen on the date you need, say so on the call rather than moving the date by default. There are other ways to make an hour feel like an occasion — stones inside a longer session, or a couples booking on 2 tables in 1 room — and we would rather offer one than have you arrive to a compromise nobody explained.
Fit
Who four hands suits, and who should book something else
It suits people who have had plenty of massages and want something they have not had before. It suits anyone whose problem is above the neck rather than in it — the person who lies down, receives a genuinely good massage, and spends 60 minutes composing emails. And it suits the occasion booking, where the point is that the hour is memorable rather than routine.
It suits less well anyone chasing 1 specific stubborn area. Two therapists covering the whole body is the opposite of concentration, and a neck that seizes at a desk is better served by a Local Massage, which spends the entire session on a single region. Our guides on massage for back pain and tension headaches explain why focused time beats broad coverage there.
It also suits less well a first massage. Nothing about it is unsafe or uncomfortable, but it is a great deal of input for someone who has never been on a table, and the effect people describe depends on already knowing what an ordinary session feels like. If this would be a first time, read what to expect at a first massage and book a standard hour instead.
| What you want | What to book | Length |
|---|---|---|
| The whole body covered and your mind switched off | Four hands, by phone | 60 or 90 min |
| One area worked properly | Local Massage | 30 or 60 min |
| A first massage, nothing unusual | Body Massage | 60 min |
| The two of you in the room together | Couples massage, 2 tables | 60 or 90 min |
Forest Grove
Where we are, and when we are open
We are at 1911 Mountain View Ln #300, Forest Grove 97116, on the corner of 19th Avenue and Mountain View Lane, about 600 feet south of Pacific Avenue — which is OR-8, the TV Highway, at this point. Suite 300 sits in a professional building shared with a dental practice, a counseling practice, an orthodontist and a chiropractor, and it has its own free lot. No meters, no garage, no validation.
We are open every day from 9 AM to 8 PM, 7 days, with no closed day in the week. A 7 PM start on a weeknight is an ordinary booking here, and so is Sunday afternoon. Four hands is the one service where the hours help less than the phone call does, because availability depends on 2 people being free rather than on the door being open.
This is the last commercial block of Forest Grove before the Cornelius city line, which puts us on the near side of town coming from Cornelius or Hillsboro along the highway. The TriMet stop on the corner is named Pacific Avenue & Mountain View Lane, and Line 57 runs that corridor every 15 minutes or better, 7 days a week. McMenamins Grand Lodge is about 0.5 miles west on the same street, the Best Western sits at the top of the block, and downtown Forest Grove and Pacific University are each about 1.6 miles west.
The mind cannot follow four hands at once, so it stops trying. That is the whole of it.
