The honest version
What a couples massage here actually is — and what it is not
A couples massage is not a different technique. It is the same work two people receive at the same time, in the same room, on two tables set side by side. Each of you gets your own therapist. You talk to each other or you do not. The only real difference from booking alone is that the door closes on both of you at once.
We say that plainly because a lot of spa pages do not. There is no special couples oil, no ceremony, no shared ritual — and at this studio there is also no couples package price. A couples booking is simply two regular sessions scheduled to start together, each priced on its own. Two 60-minute body massages come to $160. Two 90-minute sessions come to $240.
What you are actually paying for, beyond the massage itself, is the room. It is a private treatment room with two tables in it, not a curtain down the middle of a shared space, and not a table wheeled into a room that normally holds one. NCCIH's overview of stress is blunt about how much of the benefit of a practice like this comes from the setting rather than the technique, and a room where neither of you has to think about who might walk in is most of the setting.
| Session | Length | Per person | Two people |

The part people get wrong
You do not have to want the same massage
The most common mistake couples make is assuming they have to book the same thing. You do not. The two of you are with two different therapists, and pressure, focus and pace are all set individually at the start of the session. One of you can ask for firm work through the shoulders while the other asks for something light and slow, and neither request affects the other.
That extends to what happens during the hour. Some couples talk the whole time. Most stop within about ten minutes and do not start again. Both are completely normal, and nobody in the room will find it awkward — the therapists have seen every version of it.
If one of you has a specific problem area — a low back that has been bad for a month, a neck that seizes at a desk — say so when you arrive rather than in the booking. A 60-minute body massage can absolutely spend most of its time on one region, and a therapist who hears about it at minute one plans the hour differently than one who hears about it at minute forty.
- Pressure is set per person, at the start, out loud. Adjust it mid-session if it is wrong — that is normal and expected.
- You can book different lengths, but the shorter session simply finishes first and that person waits in reception.
- Undress to whatever level you are comfortable with. You are draped the entire time, and only the area being worked is uncovered.
- If it is a first massage for either of you, read what to expect at a first massage beforehand — it removes most of the nerves.
Timing
Why couples is the one booking you should not walk in for
We take walk-ins every day, and for a single session that usually works out. For a couples booking it usually does not, because it needs two therapists free at the same moment rather than one. Anniversaries, Valentine's week and the run-up to Mother's Day are the times it is most likely to be impossible on the day.
Call (503) 381-5657 and it takes about a minute to find a slot. You can also book online at any hour, including the middle of the night, which is when a surprising share of couples bookings actually get made. If you want a specific evening — and most couples do — a few days' notice is the difference between getting it and not.
Our last start is well before closing. We are open until 8 PM every day, so a session that begins at 6:30 finishes comfortably inside our hours, which makes an after-work booking realistic even for the two of you driving out from the Hillsboro end of the valley.
Booking a couples massage as a gift
If the massage is the surprise, book it in the recipient's name and tell us on the phone — we will keep the confirmation quiet on our end. What we cannot do is guarantee a specific therapist, so if someone has a favorite, say the name when you call rather than on the day.
The one thing worth knowing before you commit to a date: the person receiving it has to actually want a massage. It is a bad surprise for anyone nervous about being touched by a stranger, and a much better one when it is framed as "pick a time that works for you" with the booking already paid for.
How long the two of you should book
Sixty minutes is the default and it is enough for a full-body pass on both of you. Ninety is the better choice if either of you has a specific area that needs real time, or if this is meant to be the evening rather than a stop on the way to the evening — the extra half hour changes the pace of the whole session, not just its length.
Booking different lengths is fine. The shorter session simply finishes first and that person waits in reception, which is a perfectly ordinary way to do it if one of you wants ninety minutes and the other finds sixty is plenty.
Forest Grove
What people build the evening around
We are on the east side of Forest Grove, at the corner of 19th Avenue and Mountain View Lane, one block south of Pacific Avenue. McMenamins Grand Lodge is about half a mile west on the same street, which makes the most common plan in our appointment book fairly obvious: massage first, dinner after, and nobody has to move the car more than once.
Forest Grove sits in the Tualatin Hills AVA, established in June 2020, and the wineries on the David Hill and Dilley roads are a short drive southwest. Couples who come in from out of town most often stay at the Best Western at the top of our block — close enough that walking to the appointment is genuinely reasonable.
If you are coming from further east, we are the last commercial block of Forest Grove before the Cornelius line, which puts us on the near side of town from Cornelius, Hillsboro and the rest of the TV Highway corridor. You do not have to drive through downtown to reach us.
Evidence
What massage actually does for two stressed people
We are not going to tell you a massage fixes a relationship. What the research supports is narrower and more useful than that: massage is consistently associated with short-term reductions in stress and anxiety, and the effect is best documented for exactly the kind of general-tension complaint most couples arrive with.
Mayo Clinic Health System's summary on massage for depression, anxiety and stress is a reasonable place to start, and NCCIH's review of relaxation techniques covers the wider category with the caveats intact. Both are worth more than any spa's own claims, including ours.
The practical version: you will probably both sleep better that night, and the effect on tightness lasts days rather than weeks. If either of you is chasing something more specific than an hour of quiet — a back that keeps going out, headaches that come every week — the honest recommendation is a Local Massage focused on that one area rather than a couples booking, and our guides on massage for back pain and tension headaches explain why.
The room is the whole product. Two tables, a door that closes, and nobody walking through.

Massage in Oregon is state-regulated, and every practicing therapist must be licensed: the Oregon State Board of Massage Therapists requires 625 hours of training, a board-approved national exam plus an Oregon law exam, current Basic Life Support certification, and 25 hours of continuing education every two-year renewal — and it requires the studio itself to hold a Board-issued facility permit. Any licensed Oregon therapist or permitted studio can be verified for free on the Board's public lookup.
